Race gets wet and wild

The Baiyun Renhe Team from Guangzhou won the Dragon Boat Open 2015 on the Suzhou Creek in Putuo District, pulling ahead of the more than 800 paddlers from 52 teams which took part in the contest on June 19. Dragon boat races are traditionally held in China during the Dragon Boat Festival, which fell on June 20 this year.

The 2015 China Open included three different events, while an Invitational Tournament was also held. The Bulgarian team won the 200m race, beating participants from countries including Germany, Bulgaria, the UK, Norway and Canada, as well as the regions of Hong Kong and Macau.

A number of corporate teams took part, including the Shanghai Peninsula Hotel Team and the Putuo Lawyers Team. There were also teams comprised of government officials, including the Putuo Public Security Bureau Team, as well as student and family teams.

The teams were selected through a qualification contest organized at Changfeng Park designed to determine eligibility for the final race.

Compared to such events held in previous years, this year’s competition was fiercer and involves teams from more countries, according to organizers.

The organizing committee invited consuls from the participating countries and regions as special guests to the race.
