Parking areas opened under Metro Lines 3, 4
The Putuo District Construction and Transport Commission has converted about 4,700 square-meters of space under elevated stations along Metro Lines 3 and 4 into motorized and non-motorized vehicle parking spaces.
Working with local authorities in the Putuo Public Security Bureau, the commission has also demolished illegal constructions under train lines in order to make way for the projects.
Armed with a comprehensive and long-term management plan, the commission has built a multi-story parking facility at the Zhongtan Road Station of Metro Line 3 to cope with parking issues at local communities.
A non-profit parking area for non-motorized vehicles at Caoyang Road Station of Line 3 has been in operation for more than one year, offering not only free parking spaces for bicyclists but also free access to air pumps and free single-use rain capes.
Such services have won applause from citizens, who, for their part, are increasingly heading calls to lead green lifestyles by biking to Metro stations where they can take public transport.
The commission has also established a mechanism to reduce parking fees for local residents. Meanwhile, authorities plan to launch apps and other technological solutions which allow automobile drivers to access real-time parking information and book spaces in advance.
The commission will also put plants on top of the parking facility to improve environmental quality.
