Ganquan authorities help feed local senior citizens

Authorities in the Ganquan Sub-district have been working for years to improve services for the elderly, especially those living on their own. After hearing public suggestions, sub-district officials now offer food delivery to six points of service for elderly residents. In total, about 400 meals are handed out each day through these points.

To provide these catering services, the local authorities signed a contract with the Shanghai Shankangyuan Aging Care Service Center. According to the terms of the deal, the service center will undertake the purchasing of ingredients, the preparation of meals as well as their delivery.

Zhangjiaxiang Elderly Canteen, established by sub-district authorities in 2008, is the only seven-day elderly canteen in Shanghai which offers fresh, hot meals to local elderly residents. The meals are specially designed to satisfy the nutritional demands and tastes of the elderly.

The operation of the canteen is supervised by the service center. The center helps monitor local elders, and also carries out on-site examinations and evaluations of the sanitation at the canteen. Weekly discussions on issues involving food quality and prices are also arranged.

The canteen keeps records of the food preferences and dietary restrictions of local senior citizens, dividing meals into different colored boxes based on their requirements. Special foods are prepared for those with medical, religious or other eating restrictions. The canteen regularly holds lectures and events on how seniors can maintain their health through proper dieting habits.
