Building a bridge for enthusiasts

THE 2017 “Wingsky Cup” National Bridge Open which was held last week at the Shanghai Convention & Exhibition Center of International Sourcing in Putuo District.

The open was hosted by the Chinese Contract Bridge Association and Putuo District Sports Federation. It was also the first time Putuo District presented a national bridge contest.

The championship gathered a few top-notch teams from all over the country. For the first time the championship was open both to national open teams and teenage teams.

A total of 128 teams were vying for the four-day championship in two categories — “open teams” and “teenage teams.” Twenty teams were competing in the category of “teenage teams.”

During the opening ceremony officials said that the championship not only provides a professional platform for competition and exchange, but arouses teenagers’ awareness of bridge as well.

The Chinese Contract Bridge Association also held a summer camp at Putuo District for teenage players, with more than 300 enthusiasts and their parents attending. Michal Klukowski, one of the youngest world bridge champion from Poland, officials from eBay and China’s celebrated bridge player Wang Weimin, were invited to give lectures on the charm and skills of bridge. Students of the summer camp also participated in bridge games in pairs.

The final of the open saw the best players honored for their outstanding performance. Bridge has been a recognized as an Olympic sport.

In many countries of Western Europe and North America, bridge has been a compulsory course for high school students.

According to Zhang Jun, director of Putuo District Sports Bureau, the hosting of the 2017 “Wingsky Cup” National Bridge Open also raised the curtain on Putuo’s cultivation of a series of brands for intelligence sport events.

The bridge program, which signifies civilization, elegance, intelligence and elite will help to elevate the districts’s image of intelligence, civilization and livability. The contests will also propel the future development of bridge in Shanghai and the whole country.
