Foreign professionals attend information forum

PUDONG New Area, the frontier of Shanghai reform and opening up policies, held a forum last month to explain the local economic and business environment to foreign businessmen.

The three-day Foreign Experts Developing Program, organized by Pudong International Talent City and the China European International Business School, invited senior officials from foreign-invested companies, research centers and multinational corporate headquarters registered in Pudong.

Twenty-two foreigners from 10 countries attended sessions on Chinese politics, economics and culture, reform measures in the Shanghai Free Trade Zone and local incentives to innovative businesses and staff.

The program also included a field trip to several companies and key development zones, including Lingang New City, so that participants could get a first-hand look at policies in action.

Stella Si, managing director of the Anchor Center for Certification, said she attended the program to learn more about government policies.

“We are the first wholly foreign-funded third-party food research and development lab based in the Free Trade Zone,” Si said. “There are a lot of government initiatives and policies I want to be clearer about.”

Si was born in Shanghai and lived for 20 years in the US. She said she was surprised at the changes she found in Pudong upon her return to China.

“When I was in Shanghai, there was no Pudong New Area,” she said. “It is all developing so fast. I need to be re-educated about China. That’s why I’m here.”

Ian Simon, global marketing director of healthcare devices provider Letsozone Enterprise Development Co Ltd, said he participated in the program to glean tips about marketing in China.

“I want to learn a little bit more about doing business in China, which is quite different from doing business in Europe or the US,” said Simon. “Many companies already have learned that we can’t just push our methods onto China. We have to adjust our methods to the local market.”

Pudong regulators said similar information programs will be repeated in the future.

“We want foreign professionals to experience Pudong’s openness and development, and to grasp opportunities brought about by the Free Trade Zone and technology innovation centers,” said Feng Wei, deputy secretary of the CPC Committee of Pudong. “We will continue to strive to build an open and legally sound environment for professional talent.”

Pudong has already attracted 320 of the world’s top 500 companies, and more than 70,000 foreigners now live in the area.
