Vocalist shares musical talent with community senior citizens
LIU Qiaoling may not have made the grade as a professional singer, but she gets high marks for her work as a community music teacher in Meilong Town.
Graduated from the Nanjing Art Academy, Liu once won first prize in folk singing in a provincial contest in Jiangsu.
In 1996, she moved to Shanghai and settled in Meilong. She continued to pursue a singing career and even appeared several times on television.
“When community officials found out that I had performed on TV, they asked me if I could help with the newly formed local choir,” Liu said. “I would have preferred to focus all my attention on a professional career, but I agreed to help on a temporary basis.”
She changed her tune after meeting the members of the community choir. They were all sweet old dears with gray hair and warm personalities.
“They expected a lot of me and gave me their complete trust,” said Liu. “I started to think that one day I would be old like them, and I said to myself, ‘Why not be one of them now?’”
Starting from scratch, Liu explained musical notation and voice methods. Gradually her “class” got the hang of it. They became famous in the community, then famous in Minhang and then famous in Shanghai.
Liu now teaches five vocal music classes and a vocal solo class in the community. All are fully booked. Some of her students come all the way from Baoshan and Songjiang districts to attend her lessons.
“I think the key to the happiness for the elderly is to find people with similar interests, and I am happy to be providing such a community platform,” said Liu.
