The heroes of law and public security

FOUR Minhang candidates will be competing for honors in the fifth annual Safety Hero awards, organized by the Shanghai Committee for Political and Legislative Affairs to reward those who make great contributions in law and public security.

Residents may vote for candidates on http://safetyhero.eastday.com/index.php?r=site/index.

Here are the four local candidates.

 

Jiang Jun, policewoman with the Minhang Public Security Bureau

As a plainclothes policewoman, Jiang and her team have caught an average 150 thieves a year. Even the competition couldn’t keep Jiang from her job. Three thieves were caught during event when it was held in a square on Dushi Road. The suspects later confessed that they didn’t know the event was being held that day, but saw the crowds as an opportunity to raid a nearby gift shop. They were caught at the scene.

 

Zhao Miaojuan, retired teacher and volunteer

As the director of the Old Auntie Social Workers Organization, Zhao is known for her long-term work with prisoners in the districts. She visits them, writes them and phones them regularly so they don’t lose touch with outside society.

Even after prisoners are released, she still keeps in touch with them to see if they need any help readjusting.

“Prisoners are people, and they need care like everybody else,” she said. “I am happy to show them that I care, even if other people won’t.”

 

Peng Xionghui, a judge with the Zhuanqiao People’s Court

Peng is a frequent award winner for his hard work. Every year he deals with more than 1,400 mostly civil cases. Peng is known for his fairness and patience.

A defendant of a divorce case, who only defined herself as Zhou, said Peng’s work removed a big burden for her. She said after she was diagnosed of cancer, her husband filed for divorce three times, but she was desperate to save the marriage.

“The judge told me that a man wanting to ditch a sick wife was not worthy of my love and I deserved better,” she said. “He persuaded my husband to pay me an allowance, for which I will be eternally grateful.”

 

Ma Zhiwei, director of the social security team of Qibao Town

Ma is no policeman, but he is a vigilant crime fighter. He makes it his business to keep an eye out for trouble and has assisted police in the apprehension of burglars and pickpockets. Last year was involved with the arrest of about 110 suspects and crackdowns on more than 20 illegally gambling and entertainment venues.
