Taking the pain out of parking
MINHANG plans to increase parking availability in the district by 30,000 spaces this year.
The district plans to expand parking lots in housing estates, turn empty space underneath elevated roads into parking slots and institute more flexible use of existing parking.
The increase is to address the increasingly frustrating search for parking places.
For example, residents have been complaining that they can’t find a place to park during daytime hours at the No. 5 People’s Hospital, while in nearby Bijiang shopping mall, only half of the available 800 parking spaces are used. The Bijiang parking lot will remain empty until evening.
To ease the traffic, the Bijiang shopping mall now offers 200 parking spaces for staff working in the hospital from 9:30am to 5:30pm, charging 150 yuan (US$22) per month for each space.
Likewise, 38 parking lots in the district, including ones at the Shanglefang shopping mall and Longsheng International Square, have entered into a joint plan to share parking spaces when they are not busy.
Residents can now download the district government’s app to see where empty spots are available. They can reserve spots online, paying with mobile services.
