Shopping ‘smart’ for groceries
SOME 60 small “smart” grocery stores have opened in neighborhoods in Minhang, giving convenience to residents after work. Another 141 stores are expected by the end of the year.
Supported by the Minhang District government and developed by Fresh Market Co, a Jiangsu Province-based company, these grocery stores are closely connected with mobile devices.
Take the store at Dongyuan Neighborhood in Xinzhuang as example. The 10-square-meter store has three fresh grocery cases full of products that can be ordered using the Fresh Market app. After an order is place, the system sends a code to the buyer, which can be used to pick up their produce.
The menu on the app includes grains, vegetables, fruits, aquatic products, frozen food, dairies, meat and eggs. Imported snacks and beverage are also available.
People can order produce in the morning, and the delivery will be done before evening. If needed, people can also choose to order products three days in advance.
The app also includes mechanisms for refunds and exchanges.
“It is a brand new way of grocery shopping,” said Pei Yuxin, a Xinzhuang resident. “Our only concern is whether the produce remains fresh until the evening. And from our experiences, the quality of the food has been good.”
Pei said the prices of the vegetables were more or less the same as those sold in common wet markets.
