Schizophrenic murderer committed
A MAN who killed two senior citizens at a home for the elderly in Minhang was sentenced to compulsory medical treatment after he was diagnosed with schizophrenia, according to the Minhang District People’s Court.
Two women were killed on February 15 while they were sleeping. One of the victims was the grandmother of the killer, whom the court identified only as Zhao.
Zhao’s family said the 46-year-old man was first diagnosed with schizophrenia around 2000 and suffered from severe paranoia.
“He often beat up his sister at that time, so we had him committed to a mental hospital,” Zhao’s mother told the court. “He improved after treatment but remained on medication.”
When Zhao’s father died in 2007, his grandmother, 94 at the time, was sent to a home for the elderly to relieve the burden on the family.
The night before the murders, Zhao was behaving oddly and refused to take medicine, the court was told.
In the middle of the night, Zhao’s mother found that he had left home, taking a kitchen knife with him. She managed to catch the license plate number of the cab he had taken and phoned it in to police.
Zhao arrived at the elderly home and woke the security guard, telling him he wanted to visit his grandmother, who was in a critical condition. He was admitted to the premises.
Forty minutes after Zhao left the facility, he returned home covered in blood. He told his mother that his grandmother would no longer be a family burden. He also stabbed to death a woman living in the next room.
After his arrest, Zhao claimed he was “god” and all his family were “demons.”
According to an evaluation report from the Shanghai Mental Health Center, Zhao’s disease is incurable and he requires lifetime commitment.
