Regional taxi fares set to rise

MINHANG District will increase regional taxi fares, beginning next month.

The daytime base rate will remain unchanged, but the additional fare after 10 kilometers will rise to 3.1 yuan (50 US cents) per kilometer from 2.4 yuan, according to the Minhang District Urban Construction and Transport Commission.

From 11pm to 5am, the base fare will go up to 13 yuan from 11 yuan, while the additional fare will be 2.9 yuan per kilometer after 3 kilometers and 3.1 yuan after 10 kilometers, said the commission.

Officials said the new fare structure is still a bargain compared with downtown cab charges, which start at 14 yuan during the daytime and 18 yuan at night.

At a public hearing on the fare changes, cabbies welcomed the extra income and most riders grudgingly said they could accept the increases.

“We cabbies don’t earn a lot of money and have trouble making ends meet,” said Yang Dawei, a driver with the Jiangnan Taxi Co. “At least now we’ll get some extra income, especially at night.”

The district’s regional taxi service started in 2001. At the end of last year, more than 880 regional cabs were in operation, with 1,680 cabbies.

The regional taxis are not allowed to provide services inside the Outer-Ring Elevated Highway.
