Popular night school is always fully enrolled

Minhang Mass Art Center welcomed 80 students at its night school this month for 12-week courses. The new recruits, aged between 18 and 55 years of age, will attend entry-level classes in jazz, artwork, ukulele and body building.

“I have always loved drawing, especially with colored pencils,” said a participant surnamed Bin, who signed up for class on that subject and commutes from her home in distant district.

So eager was she about the course that she showed up an hour early for the first class.

“I think the class will help improve my skills, and it will be fun to mix with others in the class who share my passion,” she said.

Another pupil, surnamed Huang, signed up for the body-building course. With schools now cutting back on evening homework, she said she doesn’t have to spend time tutoring her child and has more free time.

“I am finding the yoga movements taught here so relaxing,” she said.

This session of classes at the center was so popular that all available slots were filled within a minute after applications opened.

“We did market research to decide the subjects of the classes,” said Wang Yongmei, head of the center’s training department.

“We are trying to provide cultural lessons for people and give them quality time away from work hours.”

The classes are held weekly on Monday evenings; the fee for the courses is 500 yuan (US$77.50). The low-cost tuition is one reason why the classes are so popular, said Fu Yan, the head of the center.

“The tuition mainly goes toward hiring teachers,” he said. “The venue and maintenance work are provided free.”

In the past, evening classes typically focused on senior citizens or children, but at least 70 percent of those enrolled now at the center are in their 20s and 30s.

Fu said the center tries to select lessons in easy-to-learn subjects so that students don’t get frustrated. The ukulele lessons, for example, aim to have students leave with the ability to play a few pieces.
