Police crack a major burglary case
Minhang police said they have solved a burglary involving stolen goods valued at 9 million yuan (US$1.45 million).
The Minhang Public Security Bureau said a woman who lived in a villa neighborhood in the district reported earlier this month that a jade necklace and a 3-karat diamond ring valued at 5 million yuan were stolen from her home.
Crime scene investigators found no sign of breaking and entering, and nothing turned up on surveillance cameras.
Police said they began to suspect that the thief was someone close to the victim. They also discovered that the woman owned two villas in the neighborhood, one for her family and the other for her driver, housekeeper and maid.
The staff were brought in for questioning. The driver, surnamed Chen, eventually confessed to the theft, police said.
Police said Chen found a window open in his employer’s home when the family was out one night. He entered and stole the jewelry, they said. The stolen goods were retrieved from the air outlet of the air conditioner in Chen’s room.
Theft of goods valued at 500,000 yuan or more normally carries a prison sentence of between 10 years and life.
