Content is king and Minhang is the throne room

A national online visual production center will be established in Minhang this year.

Located in the Zizhu High-Tech Industrial Development Zone, the China Web Series and Micromovie Creation Center will go into operation by the end of this year.

The center will be run by the creative team of Youku Tudou Inc., the biggest online video site in China, the company announced at recent press conference.

“For the next decade, original content will be the one of the main focuses in the development of video websites,” said Lu Fanxi, executive producer of Youku.com. “Both creation and talent will be significant to us.”

In recent years, web series and micro-movies have been booming in popularity in China.

In 2010, the micro-movie “Old Boy” attracted more than 80 million clicks online, and its movie version goes into theaters all over the country this month.

Last year more than 9,000 micro-movies were released in China. That’s in addition to 1,000 episodes of web series, according to the base officials on a press conference recently.

Many projects have attracted large fan bases in the country because of their innovative themes and stories.

Pi San, director of the online animation series “Miss Puff,” will also be moving his studio to the new center. Since 2010, the 104-episode series has received 250 million clicks online.

“My major is painting, and I believe the Internet is my only chance to enter the animation industry,” said Pi San. “I hope the center can provide the help I need.”

The China Online Visual and Audio Production Center, already in the Zizhu zone, will provide policy, financial and tax support to the new center.

The Shanghai Administration of Culture, Radio, Film and Television said it expects the center to create good projects and also help cultivate new talent in the industry.

“The center has several universities nearby, which it can tap to its advantage,” said Hu Jinjun, director of the administration.
