Capturing the heartfelt side of healthcare
THE healthcare system is riddled with bad news about corruption, attacks on medical personnel and tense relations between doctors and patients.
Enough is enough, said Hu Jialiang, who thought that the compassionate side of healthcare was getting short shrift.
A retired medical worker from the Gumei Community Health Service Center, Hu set out to change perceptions. His tool was his camera.
“I started photography when I was very young, and mostly I just took pictures of scenery in the past,” he said. “But now I think I can use photography to portray healthcare in a more favorable light.”
He focused his lens on his former workplace. His most popular photo, titled “Support,” won first prize in a 2014 city photography contest. The picture was taken on the lawn of the health services center.
“Every day when I went to work, I saw nurses accompanying patients on morning walks on the lawn,” said Hu. “The nurses were patient and gentle, and the patients trusted them completely. That is how the relationship between medical workers and patients should be.”
His photos capture poignant moments. “Fingers Connecting with the Heart” features a nurse cutting the fingernails of an old woman. “Beginning with One Step” shows nurses helping patients tie their shoes. “Drops” pictures a nurse absorbed with setting up an infusion.
“Through pictures, I want people to understand that both patients and medical workers are human,” said Hu. “They have their bright sides, but they can also experience bad days or difficult times in their lives.”
