Young doctor wins villagers’ trust

TAO Tianjie was a new graduate when he came to Cao’an Village Clinic in the Jiading Industrial Zone. At first, villagers doubted his ability and were skeptical about whether he could work there long term.

Two years later, Tao has proved himself to be a reliable doctor.

In one recent case he had a villager who was complaining of hypertension. But Tao knew better and soon diagnosed sunstroke. After taking prescribed drugs, the villager recovered.

“In addition to the recognition on my ability, the more important thing is the trust from villagers, and that is thanks to my teacher,” Tao said.

The teacher he mentions is Wu Weijuan, one of the barefoot doctors who brought health care to China’s rural areas during the “cultural revolution (1966-76).”

Wu, now 62, came to the village at the age of 19 after leaving high school. Before Tao’s arrival, Wu, re-employed after retirement was the village’s only doctor.

Wu found Tao rich in theoretical knowledge but lacked experience ... and the villagers’ trust. She took on the task of teaching him to take over her responsibilities.

There are more than 2,000 permanent residents in the village, and the clinic should not only provide medical diagnosis and treatment, but also be responsible for newly-born babies, treatment for rehabilitation patients, repeat visits to cancer patients and delivery of drugs for mental patients. Without the villagers’ trust the job would be difficult if not impossible.

Wu’s first step was to accompany Tao on his visits.

“Now I can retire as Tao is clever and hardworking, he has become a familiar man among villagers,” Wu said.

There are more than 100 doctors like Tao in Jiading, all Jiading natives who have returned to district clinics after graduating from Shanghai Medical College and spending two years at Jiading District Central Hospital.
