What you didn’t know about Jiading in 6 minutes

A promotional video called “The Jiading You Don’t Know” has become a hit on the Internet. It showcases the Shanghai International Circuit, Confucius Temple and Jiading-born Chinese diplomat Vi Kyuin Wellington Koo.

The video is 6 minutes 30 seconds long and uses dynamic pictures to introduce Jiading’s culture relics, Jiading’s massacre by Qing Dynasty troops (1644-1911) in 1645, its traditional education and its modern Auto City.

The video was made by Xu Chenxi, a Jiading native born in the 1980s.

Five to six years ago, Xu was inspired by a foreigner’s video called “10 minutes and you know about China” and decided to make one about Jiading.

He started to collect similar foreign videos to learn their techniques. Xu’s video was uploaded in May after six months’ production work.

Though Xu grew up in Jiading, he was not very familiar with its history. The Internet and Jiading Museum became his school of learning. Xu spent quite a long time in the museum to shoot photos or videos or do some research on some historical documents.

“Information from the Internet should be double-checked, particularly that relevant to Jiading’s historical figures,” he said. Xu hopes to present a video to audience that is not only original but also correct.

When designing the depiction of Vi Kyuin Wellington Koo, Xu watched the movie “My 1919” again and again, focusing on the segment of Koo’s speech disclosing the demands of Japanese diplomats at Paris Peace Conference. Xu spared no effort to restore the original scene, not only to pay respect to Koo, but also to make the video reliable.

Besides the history, Xu also strove to make the images correct for Jiading’s current features such as the color of the Confucius Temple’s tiles and walls, and the structure of the Fahua Pagoda. Xu did not solely rely on one photo but shot many photos and videos from different angles at different times of the day.

To make the video better, Xu also taught himself to use computer software for film and television post-production.

“Sometimes I have to watch frame by frame to learn these techniques,” Xu said.

To ensure a perfect video, Xu would undo those he wasn’t satisfied with and start again. “Once, I remade six seconds of video four to five times,” Xu said.

The work was mostly done at nights and Xu would spend four to five hours on the video each day, until two or three o’clock in the morning. “It took me 500 to 600 hours to complete the film editing,” Xu said.

During the days he was making the video, Xu said that he had also learnt a lot about his hometown in detail. It is not only for the Jiading natives, but also for the people living outside Jiading to appreciate the beauty of the district and its colorful features both in old and modern times in the shortest time, Xu added.
