Pollution prevention paying off

JIADING environment protection authority plans to improve the volatile organic compounds emissions of 200 key enterprises by the end of September and review 1,800 enterprises with emission risks by the end of this year.
Volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, are emitted as gases from certain solids or liquids. They include a variety of chemicals, some of which may have adverse health effects. They are generally known as primary emissions of PM2.5.
“Two major sources of VOCs are industrial emissions and vehicle tail gas,” said Wang Jian, head of the pollution prevention division of the district’s environment protection bureau. The bureau is enhancing its supervision and management of VOCs emissions of industrial enterprises this year, Wang said.
Jiading has introduced new standards on VOCs emissions. The one for the paint and coatings industry is more than a dozen times stricter than the previous one. For printing companies, it has been raised nearly three times.
More than 60 companies have shut down their businesses or moved. Many others carried out improvements.
Some enterprises are investing heavily in cutting their emissions, while others face fines that can accumulate on a daily basis.
