Number’s up for unlicensed boat owners

JIADING is dealing with the problem of unlicensed boats and illegal berthing.

Law enforcement personnel set out prepared this month.

“We have done overall investigations and are able to identify 22 boats,” said Liu Chuansheng, a maritime official who is part of the action program. “The owners and other persons on the boats are also within our knowledge. ”

The boats that need to be clearance pose a threat to those onshore as well as those offshore.

Owners build frames on the boats and dump household waste into the river, blocking the river ways and causing sanitary problems. The electricity connected on board might also trigger safety issues.

Neighboring residents feel uneasy about their presence.

“It smells so bad,” a resident living nearby, said.

“Besides, those drifting on the river might be a threat, too, as neither the police station nor the maritime units seem to be able to reach them.”

People on the boats are educated on relevant laws to ensure a cleaner environment on waters in Jiading. Coordination with Putuo and Baoshan districts in Shanghai will further ensure cleanliness.
