Hesai technology advances case for vehicles that drive themselves
JIADING-BASED Hesai Instruments Inc launched China’s first 32-channel laser sensing LiDAR, during the 2016 China International Industry Fair in Shanghai.
LiDAR, which stands for Light Detection and Ranging, is a remote-sensing technology that measures and maps the distance to targets, in addition to the characteristics of objects in its path.
LiDAR essentially maps its surroundings by illuminating its targets with laser light and then analyzing that light to create a high resolution digital image.
Hesai is a sensor manufacturer applying itself to the research and development of machine senses, particularly the sense of vision, according to the company’s CEO, Li Yifan.
The Hesai LiDAR can observe surrounding people and items as well as their motion with a panoramic view.
Even more powerful is its short feedback time.
It blinks in just 3 microseconds and the performance is among the best in industry.
“Through data processing, we can see the distance between the device and the people on the screen which can be accurate to centimeters,” Li said.
“I think no one will drive on their own in 20 years,” he said.
“What we focus on is automatic driving — an entirely new market worth hundreds of billions of yuan.”
Li’s confidence stems from a recent road test which suggested that Hesai LiDAR was able to make accurate feedback in time in dealing with automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, blind spot detection and automatic cruise control.
At present, millimeter wave radar plus cameras is a widely adopted solution in the field of automatic driving but this technology has obvious defects in long distance identification, 3D imaging, and accuracy of identification. LiDAR is said to be able to make up the deficiencies.
In Li’s opinion, accuracy of 99 percent is not enough. What automatic driving needs is an accuracy of 99.99999 percent.
Automatic driving technology nowadays is still in its early stages “in response to the complex environment,” so there is some way to go.
