Health examinations saving local lives by catching diseases at an early stage

More than 167,000 women in Jiading District received free health exam on gynecological diseases and breast diseases last year, with 109 of them diagnosed with cancer, local health authorities said.
The free health exam has become a regular event since 2008. It mainly serves women who suffer poverty or have retired.
A total of 12,283 women in Jiading received the free health exam between January and May this year, and 3,474 of them were diagnosed with diseases, including 15 cancer patients. Cervical cancer is the top killer of local women, but it can be removed if it’s discovered at an early stage.
A 69-year-old woman surnamed Zhu in Huating Town benefited from the exam last year. She was diagnosed with both breast cancer and endometrial cancer. Thanks to the exam, the two cancers were discovered early and surgery was successful.
It is recommended that women have at least one health exam every year. “You shall never ignore any issue concerning health because deterioration of diseases is usually beyond your imagination,” one Jiading doctor said.
The doctor mentioned the example of a local woman who was found with a tiny nodule in her breast that was just 9 millimeters in diameter when she went for a regular health exam.
The doctor suggested she have a follow-up visit three months later. However, it was six months before she returned to the hospital. The nodule had grown to a diameter of 2.5 centimeters.
According to the doctor, a complete exam on gynecological diseases and breast diseases would only cost about 500 yuan (US$78.1), which is not a heavy burden for those who do not qualify for the free examinations.
