Enjoying a feast for the eyes ... and stomach

THE best time to enjoy lotus is from the end of June to early September, and almost all the parts of the aquatic plant can be used in dishes, each offering special health benefits.

Lotus seeds are good for the heart, kidneys and liver, while the roots help clear heat and replenish blood. The stems can help clear congestion, while the leaves have heat reducing properties and are beneficial to pregnant women.

This year, the Guyi Garden Restaurant has designed a new menu of lotus dishes — adding to last year’s range of cold dishes and desserts.

One of the most common uses of lotus is to wrap fillings such as pork and chicken in lotus leaves, with the lotus fragrance transfering to the fillings. Other lotus dishes use lotus seeds, roots, flowers and stems.

Guyi Garden gets its lotus supplies from the Hongze Lake in neighboring Jiangsu Province, with deliveries every week for chefs to transform into delicious dishes.

Praise from diners

Of more than 20 lotus dishes on the menu, golden shrimp balls and a dish called “Moonlight on the Lotus Pond” have won most praise from diners.

Golden shrimp balls look the same as standard fried shrimp balls, but with the big difference that the shrimp balls are covered in lotus root strips instead of breadcrumbs.

Fresh and smooth-tasting shrimp together with crisp lotus root strips have proved to be an irresistible combination.

“Moonlight on the Lotus Pond” looks as poetic as its name. Chefs carve wax gourds into lotus leaves, cut fish and meat into lotus petal shapes and use green beans as lotus seeds, while vegetable juice serves as lotus pond water.

It looks great and tastes delicious — as cooling as summer breeze.

The average price of these dishes is about 50 yuan (US$8).

As Chinese people believe, agricultural products should be eaten in their season.

So now, when their blooms are at their best, it is the time to get along and sample lotus dishes.
