Designer finds inspiration in Jiading workshop

Taiwan fashion designer Wang Dacheng set up his own brand in 1986, specializing in wedding dresses and evening gowns.

Lin Chi-ling, Joe Chen and Li Xiang are the among the many models and actresses who have worn his creations, and with celebrity endorsements such as those, many people are wondering why he chose to site his studio in an alleyway in Shanghai’s suburban Jiading District.

When you drive along the Shanghai-Nanjing Expressway and turn into the road where the studio should be, it’s still easy to miss it.

Stepping up to the second floor of a workshop with a dog barking out front, we finally found Wang’s studio and were amazed by all the gorgeous creations inside.

“It’s the man who really understands woman,” told Wang, arranging a dress with layers of lace. “I could tell what kind of clothes fit a girl most with one glance at her. Choosing a wedding dress is the same. You have to balance the comfort and the line of beauty.”

Wang designs and makes all the dresses himself but, with so many years of experience, Wang hesitates to single out the designs that have given him most satisfaction so far.

“Fashion design has to follow the trends, that will pass by in a wink. If you insist on choosing, I’d say the ‘Disney Series’,” he said.

The “Disney Series” came out as a cooperation between Disney and Wang in October last year. Clever Snow White, brave Princess Pocahontas, kind Cinderella and elegant Queen Aisha, Wang place this set of designs in the middle of his workshop and tells us how he sees the series.

“Disney figures remain the classic of fashion,” he said.

“Babies and girls who watches Disney will turn into ladies, and then turn mothers, letting their children join. The stories act like connection between the generations so that’s the main reason why the series will stand the test of time.

Wang said he chose Jiading as his workplace the first time he came to Shanghai, and felt himself at home.

“The rent is low and I feel more concentrated here than in the downtown of a city,” Wang said,

“If possible, I’d like to open a bridal shop here, to serve more Jiading girls wearing dresses designed by me.”
