Community’s green foundation is bearing fruit
IN Jiang’an Community of Jiangqiao Town, residents have donated 12,588 yuan (US$1,879) to set up a “Green Foundation” to improve the environment and plant more trees and flowers in the community.
Jiang’an is an old neighborhood with a history of over 20 years.
At the beginning of the year, the community held a tea party for community officials, and they talked about the environmental protection issue and the protection of green belts.
A team of more than 20 people patrolled in the community, and they donated money to buy tools and plants. Ji Shasha, a leader of local dancing team, suggested setting up a foundation.
Setting up the fund
Tang Lihua, Party secretary of the community’s management committee, contacted related departments in Jiangqiao Town and received a positive reply.
Tang held a meeting with team leaders and the foundation was launched on January 19 with residents donating 6,005 yuan. By the end of September, it had received a total of 12,588 yuan.
A management team and a supervision team have been set up as well to make better use of the foundation. So far the biggest expenditure is on an electric tricycle for 2,500 yuan. One person has been assigned to keep and use the tricycle, which plays a big role in transporting saplings and cleaning up garbage.
Beautifying the walls
To decorate some walls, the community management committee spent 670 yuan to buy brushes, paint and pigment. Members of the calligraphy and painting society in the community painted the walls themselves.
The neighborhood committee also rented out space in the community for gardening lovers to plant their own flowers and trees.
After years of efforts, the exposed land in the community disappeared and this year alone there are more than 500 new plants or flowers in the community.
“Residents take an active part in the affairs of the community after the launching of the ‘green foundation’ as it played an active role in self-governance of the community. Now every resident regards the community as one’s own,” Tang said.
