Dazzling lights brighten renovated Yuyuan Road

NEON lights are illuminated on Yuyuan Road each night as the local holiday season stretches into the Spring Festival.

The lights are of various shapes, like stars, and decorate houses and trees along the road. There are also lights installed on the lawn in front of Creater Space Huge to create a fantasy land of glowing trees and silver flowers.

The century-old street is also getting a face lift. Work is underway to beautify and enliven the area lined with historic buildings.

On the section between Dingxi and Jiangsu roads, boutique stores and cultural facilities have created a literary, artistic atmosphere. Gradually the area’s once-cramped streets have been returned to their former glory.

Creater Management, a subsidiary of Shanghai Huge Group Co, is in charge of the renewal of Yuyuan Road. The neon lights are a special gift it has offered to honor the street where luminaries like Eileen Chang, Fu Lei, Shi Zhecun, Jiang Guangnai, Rewi Alley, Tsai Yuen-pei and Qian Xuesen once resided.

Yuyuan Road might be a century old, but new ideas and styles are helping rejuvenate it. It’s not only the look of the street that’s changing, but also the lifestyles of the people who live on it.

There are now cafes, workshops, a book and jewelry store, a florist’s shop and a bistro. Art exhibitions are held regularly here, on many occasions at the street’s dozens of protected historical and cultural sites.

The municipal and local governments have listed the road and blocks around it as a protected historic area covering 223 hectares. Garden villas and Western-style lane houses dominate the road, many of them built in the decade after the First World War.

A walk down Yuyuan Road is like turning the pages of a history book. Winter is the perfect time to soak up the tranquil and nostalgic atmosphere of the road.
