Soaking up rainwater
A “sponge city” program will be carried out in 40 locations across Hangzhou, covering 187 square kilometers in total, according to a city government plan.
The program, which aims to create more green space to absorb rainwater and channel it underground for use during droughts, will be tested first in Baita, Fuxing, Sports Park, Hangzhou Boiler Factory and the Hangzhou Oxygen Plant. It can also reduce incidents of flash flooding in urban areas caused by torrential rains, officials said.
By 2020, the program will cover about 25 percent of Hangzhou’s total area, according to the plan.
Meanwhile, Hangzhou will build utility tunnels over a total length of 32.26 kilometers, mainly in Dajiangdong area and along Riverside Avenue, Desheng Road, Genshan Road and Jinqiao Road. The tunnels are designed to ease traffic congestion caused by pipeline and cable repairs.
