Design awards presented

A CHINESE scientist and a Finnish programmer who won the Design Intelligence Award were awarded 2 million yuan (US$289,715) in Hangzhou on Monday.

The competition was organized by the China Academy of Art, which gave away the two DIA Gold medal.

The Chinese winner Wang Mengqiu developed the Hover Camera — a small self-flying drone built specifically for taking selfies and footages.

When folded, it is roughly the size of an average hardcover book. The camera’s four propellers and motors are encased in an intricate carbon-fiber framework that’s not only strong and light, but also helps in cooling its internal components.

Linda Liukas from Finland won the award for “Hello Ruby,” a children’s book and app that teaches the fundamentals of programming through stories and kid-friendly tools. The book is now published in over 20 languages including Japanese, Korean, Dutch and Finnish.

The Design Intelligence Award was instituted last year. It also honored 20 other designers for their innovative creations. A total of 300,000 yuan was distributed among them.

The organizers received over 2,000 works from the US, UK, Japan, Finland, Norway and China.
