1,000 relics unearthed

MORE than 1,000 cultural relics were unearthed from a construction site in Lin’an City, west of Hangzhou.

The relics included copper coins and ceramic pieces dating from the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms (AD 907-979) and Song Dynasty (960-1127), ancient floor tiles and drainage ditches in a pit of about 400 square meters, according to archaeologists in Lin’an and from Hangzhou. They believe the site used to house the county government or the official residence of Qian Liu (AD 852-932), founder of the Wuyue Kingdom, because the place was called Taimiaoshan, or Imperial Shrine Hill.

Workers found slates and floor tiles in March when they were digging a pool for washing dump trucks during the construction of the air-raid shelter. Alocal archaeologist was summoned and he reported to the Hangzhou Heritage Protection Bureau for permission to excavate the site.

“I thought it was a government building or the tomb of an official in the Ming (1368-1644) or Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). But it turned out to be a courtyard of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms,” said Ni Yaqing, the archaeologist from Lin’an.
