Yangshan open to ships on foggy days

SHANGHAI Yangshan Deep-water Port will save 1.5 billion yuan (US$242 million) each year because ships are now able to enter the port under foggy conditions as it improved its navigation capacity.
Starting yesterday, vessels of all types are able to enter the port if the visibility is beyond 500 meters, while the entry of 2,000-TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) vessels will depend on a visibility of between 200 and 500 meters.
Yangshan used to forbid vessels to enter if visibility was below 1,000 meters due to safety concerns arising from weather conditions over its location. Bad weather, mainly fog, prevented the entry of ships for 30 days each year.
The move to improve capacity was jointly announced yesterday by Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration, Shanghai Transportation Commission and Shanghai International Port (Group) Co.
Xu Guoyi, head of Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration, said improvement in communication and navigation technologies has made it possible for more vessels to enter even in tough weather conditions, enhancing productivity at the port.
“After 17 months of experiments and analysis we finally managed to make a breakthrough in taking in more ships on foggy days,” Xu said.
Shanghai’s authorities in 2013 launched a two-way navigation as part of efforts to increase Yangshan port’s capacity and improve safety.
