New homes’ average price rises on optimism

THE average cost of a new home in China rose for the first time in nine months in January amid a rebound in sentiment in more cities, a latest report released by the China Index Academy showed.

The average price of new homes in 100 cities edged up 0.21 percent from December to 10,564 yuan (US$1,688) per square meter last month, the academy said.

“Amid an increasingly optimistic outlook, the country’s real estate market saw a notable rise in the number of cities recording monthly price growth in the first month of 2015,” the academy said. “In particular, the country’s 10 largest cities, including the four first-tier cities, all recorded month-on-month price rises.”

Nationwide, prices in 44 of the 100 cities grew from a month earlier, an increase of 14 from December. Nine of them saw a rise of above 1 percent, up from three in December.

Of the 56 cities in which prices fell month on month, 16 saw declines above 1 percent, down by 11 from a month earlier.

In the 10 largest cities, the average price of a new home gained 0.59 percent to 18,990 yuan per square meter last month, compared with a 0.36 percent retreat in December. Beijing led with a monthly price rise of 1.2 percent while home prices in Chengdu lost 0.9 percent from a month earlier, the biggest among the 10 cities, according to the academy.
