20th Century Fox to open theme park in China

THE 20th Century Fox Inc is planning to announce the location for its first amusement park in China within a few months as the film and television company is to seek a foothold in one of the world’s fastest growing entertainment market, a company executive said.

Rupert Murdoch’s film and television company is also seeking to open 50 retail stores in China for licensed products of its animated series The Simpsons by the end of 2016.

"We've been talking with several provincial government to decide on the final destination for our first opening (of park) in China," Jeffrey Godsick, president of Fox Consumer Products said in an interview with Shanghai Daily.

The retail stores will sell licensed clothes and apparels as well as other fashion items as Fox aims to take a piece of cake in the booming culture and entertainment market as China is already one of the top entertainment markets for western intellectual properties.

“It won’t be surprising if China quickly moves ahead of Europe and other parts of the Asia to become the second largest entertainment consumer products market within three to five years and even a potential to surpass the US eventually," he added.

Godsick said the company intends to introduce The Simpsons as a fashion brand and it's not just aiming at revenue, but the potential brand impact and exposure by these costumes and fashion accessories.

He refused to disclose the potential sales figures for the Simpsons' licensed products in China or the company's investment in the country.

Last year, revenue at Fox consumer products was around US$2.1 billion in the US.
