Roche invests in contagious disease center
SWISS pharmaceutical giant Roche yesterday said it will invest 136 million Swiss francs (US$140 million) in a new research center in Shanghai to work on discovery and development of infectious diseases.
The new Roche Innovation Center will collaborate with the local scientific community to research, discover and develop infectious diseases.
“We’re sharpening our focus on drug discovery, research and early clinical development to address unmet medical demands in infectious diseases in Asia and globally,” said John Reed, head of Roche Pharma Research and Early Development.
The 14,000-square-meter new research center, located at Shanghai Roche Pharmaceutical Ltd’s current site in Zhangjiang in the Pudong New Area, is set to start operation in 2018.
Stella Xu, site head of Roche Innovation Center Shanghai, said yesterday that innovations made by Chinese scientists at the Shanghai site can be transformed quickly into real medicines to treat patients in China and worldwide.
