Tmall global sales increase 10 times in 10 months

CHINA'S largest e-commerce group Alibaba said today transaction size at its overseas shopping division Tmall International added more than 10 times since its initial launch in February this year.

By the end of November this year, as many as 5,400 overseas brands from 25 countries and regions have opened official marketplace at Tmall. Among them, 30 Tmall stores have recorded transaction of more than 10 million yuan (US$1.6 million).

Foreign retailers such as Metro AG are also planning to open their official stores on Tmall early next year.

The most popular categories on Tmall international include food, cosmetics, maternity and baby products.

Local Internet consultancy iResearch estimated online retail sales will jump 45.8 percent from a year go to 2.76 trillion yuan this year.

At the same time, Alibaba said it has also reached deals with customs authorities in Shanghai, Guangzhou, Zhengzhou, Hangzhou and Ningbo to speed up customs clearance procedure and delivery process.

Overseas retailers such as Zara, ASOS, Burberry have also joined in Tmall this year to boost their presence and promote their products to consumers living in lower tier cities that don’t have access to physical stores.

US retailer Costco officially opened its Tmall store in October this year and on Singles Day (November 11), sales surged to 22 million yuan in the 24-hour sales campaign.

It also plans to expand the product offerings on Tmall in the next year.
