PlayStation set for mainland debut
SONY Corp’s PlayStation will be unveiled on the Chinese mainland in January, the Japan-based company said yesterday.
Microsoft Corp had launched its own XBox on the Chinese mainland in September, meaning domestic game fans can now buy the top game consoles which were banned on the mainland for more than a decade.
Sony, which has a cooperation arrangement with Shanghai-based media giant Oriental Pearl Group, will start selling PlayStations on January 11. The PlayStation 4 prices start from 2,899 yuan (US$475) while a handheld PlayStation Vita costs upward of 1,299 yuan.
“Sony will try its best to offer Chinese customers unified PlayStation and services that meet the global standard. But we have to obey Chinese regulations,” said Takehito Soeda, Sony’s head of the PlayStation business in China.
Both PlayStation and Microsoft’s Xbox One are expected to create a huge video game market while entertaining millions, said Xu Hui, president of Oriental Pearl.
Foreign console makers were forbidden from selling their devices in China for 13 years over fears about their negative influence on children.
China’s video game industry is expected to generate about US$10 billion in sales next year, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers.
PlayStation 4 sales reached 13.5 million units globally by September, which made it the most popular PlayStation since Sony debuted its first-generation PlayStation in 1994.
Sony would not forecast the expected sales of PlayStations in China but said it would produce “as much as necessary” at its plant in Shanghai’s free trade zone.
About 70 game developers, including Ubisoft, Koei and Beijing-based Perfect World, promised to develop game titles for PlayStation in China.
