PPTV expands into the hardware market

Online video streaming company PPTV, which is a unit of domestic retail Group Suning's cultural and entertainment arm, said it will boost cooperation with local home appliance manufacturers to expand into the hardware market.

PPTV has formed partnership with more than 30 collaborators including China International Broadcasting Network, an authorized Internet TV service provider, as well as smart TV set manufacturers and other provincial level smart TV operators to drive synergies.

Other partners of PPTV include telecommunication operators, cable operators and TV manufacturers including Hisense, Skyworth and Konka.Vice president of PPTV Mi Xin told a press briefing in Shanghai that it aims to sell 2 billion yuan worth of TV sets through Suning's online and offline retail channels within this year, and it seeks a leading position in the booming home entertainment market.

Earlier this month, it also acquired online streaming rights for Legendary Entertainment's Warcraft for 120 million yuan(US$18 million) to seek more synergies between online streaming, video and hardware businesses. China’s online video companies are moveing upstream into original content production as well as hardware manufacturing to develop a more mature business model.

Suning, which became a part-owner of Italian soccer club Inter Milan earlier this month, is also expected to benefit from the collaboration among various business units.
