Online sales proportion to double
THE proportion of online sales is expected to double in the next 10 years to 7.8 percent globally while China’s portion will surge to 15 percent from the current 2.6 percent, according to a latest study by consumer research firm Kantar Worldpanel.
By 2025, the total sales of fast-moving consumer goods via e-commerce websites are estimated at US$130 billion globally.
China’s online grocery sales jumped 34 percent from 2013 to 2014. Globally, online sales rose 28 percent last year.
Around 35.9 percent of Chinese households shop through online channels at least once in the past year, according to Kantar’s research which tracked 40,000 urban households in China.
“The e-commerce channel is providing FMCG players with genuine growth opportunity as consumers are increasingly embracing the new channel,” said Jason Yu, general manager of Kantar Worldpanel China.
With more investments in the distribution network and cold chain delivery as well as government efforts to promote cross-border e-commerce, the growth will continue in the next 10 years, Yu added.
