Huawei aims to tap 4G population growth, executive says

THE growth of 4G user population is expected to speed up within the next two years globally, especially in the Chinese domestic market, thanks to more 4G networks and low cost of 4G phones, China’s biggest telecommunications equipment maker Huawei Technologies said today.

By the end of 2016, global 4G user base will hit 1.1 billion, more than double from 400 million by 2014, said Huawei, citing figures from industry alliance GSMA Intelligence.

“There will be another wave for 4G network construction in 2015, especially in China,” Wang Jun, Huawei’s (4G) LTE networks president, said during a media briefing in Shanghai today.

Handset vendors can offer LTE (long term evolution) phones starting from US$110, which is affordable by most consumers globally.

Shenzhen-based Huawei also expected to grab more market shares in the domestic market in 2015 and 2016 when carriers expand 4G networks, thanks to its huge investment on research and overseas experiences, Wang added.

China Mobile expected to totally build 700,000 4G base stations by 2014, 200,000 more compared with its original target, Sina.com reported today.

To compete with bigger rival China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom are expected to greatly expand 4G networks after they were allowed to start commercial 4G services in 16 cities nationwide in July.

In the 331 existing 4G networks globally by September, Huawei has been involved in building 154 of them, followed by Ericsson’s 138 networks and Nokia-Siemens’ 77 networks, according to industry association GSA. Many networks have two or more providers.

Huawei, whose wireless revenue is still behind rival Ericsson, expected to surpass the Swedish firm within two or three years in the 4G wave, Wang said. At present, Huawei has 546 core patents on 4G, accounting for 25 percent of total core patents, Wang added. Meanwhile, Huawei aims to invest US$6 billion on next-generation 5G services by 2018.
