Han: Internet+ 'an irresistible trend'

SHANGHAI should fully embrace the revolutionary power of Internet to advance its agenda of building the city into a scientific and technology innovation hub with global influence, Shanghai Party Chief Han Zheng said today while he presided over a study session for the CPC Shanghai Committee’s standing members.

Tencent Inc Chairman Pony Ma, as the keynote speaker of the 90-minute study session this afternoon, shared with senior Party officials his views and visions of “Internet+” era and opportunities for Shanghai.

“Internet+” is a popular concept recently coined that points to traditional industries’ revamping through connecting with the Internet in all aspects. In this March’s National People’s Congress meeting, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang called on the country to enter the “Internet+” era by upgrading existing industries through better integrating with Internet.

The city will keep abreast with new development and take on challenges as it opens arms to the Internet+ era, Han said while he presided over the study session.

“Internet+ represents a brand new lifestyle, production mode and social development trend in the future,” Han said. “It’s an irresistible trend.”

The city shall make full use of such development to push forward different industries’ integration with Internet sector to strengthen the traditional industries, Han added.

Han also called on the city government to make better use of its data, which is key assets during future urban management, and be more open-minded in managing and using such data.

Such study sessions, with industry pundits or academic elites as speakers, are often organized for senior Party officials at central and local levels to catch up with latest developments and findings in key areas and themes.
