Console consent: Firm in talks to unveil Sony’s PS4
A Shanghai-based media firm is in talks with Sony Corp to introduce PlayStation 4, the world’s most popular game console, in China, where sales of foreign game consoles have been forbidden for more than a decade, media reported yesterday.
Earlier, another Shanghai company, BesTV, announced a deal with Microsoft Corp to set up a home entertainment business joint venture in the city’s pilot free trade zone, probably covering the debut of the rival Xbox 360 console in China.
Shanghai Oriental Pearl (Group) Co is in talks with Sony to set up a similar JV in the FTZ in August, aimed at introducing PS4 in China, media reported citing sources.
Sony declined to comment yesterday while Oriental Pearl could not be reached.
Sony has set up a special “strategy” department to develop new businesses, such as game console sales, in China. It has been making sustained efforts to set up a company in the FTZ to achieve the target, several Sony sources said.
Since 2000, firms have been banned from selling foreign game consoles on the Chinese mainland as a policy to protect children. But firms can test new businesses in the FTZ as authorities have lifted the ban in the zone.
PS4 tops the world with 7 million in sales, followed by Xbox 360 with 5 million units.
