China Mobile seeks to add 250m 4G users in 2015

CHINA Mobile aims to add 250 million 4G users by the end of this year, more than double the current level, as it taps more 4G base stations and a wider choice of low-cost 4G models, the world’s biggest mobile carrier said yesterday.

At the end of January, China Mobile had more than 100 million 4G users and over 700,000 4G base stations nationwide. It aims to gain 250 million 4G users and build 1 million 4G base stations by the end of this year.

The 4G market is set to see fierce rivalry this year because rivals China Unicom and China Telecom are likely to get new 4G licenses based on the FDD-LTE technology on Thursday. This will make them more competitive against China Mobile whose 4G services based on the China-developed TD-LTE technology.

By January, several models such as Apple’s iPhone 6 and Xiaomi’s Redmi 2 support China Mobile’s 4G network, and 65 percent of them cost below 1,300 yuan (US$208).
