Amazon to spur e-book reading

AMAZON officially debuted its Kindle Unlimited in China yesterday, and users are able to access 44,000 e-books at a cheaper price than those charged in India and the US.

The new Kindle Unlimited service charges a flat monthly rate of 12 yuan (US$1.84) in China, cheaper than US$3 in India and US$9.90 in the United States. Amazon is offering a favorable annual rate of 118 yuan in the Chinese market.

The Kindle Unlimited service lets users borrow as many e-books as they want at one time from a collection of 40,000 Chinese language e-books and 3,500 English e-books, including best-selling titles by popular Chinese and foreign authors such as Han Han, Yi Zhongtian and Higashino Keigo.

Subscribers can find titles by browsing the Kindle China store and looking for e-books with Kindle Unlimited logo. Click on the “Read for Free” link and the book becomes available. The service supports Kindle devices and smartphones and tablets with Kindle apps.

The service will make e-books accessible to more readers in China, said Amazon China.
