Alipay’s cross-border transactions more than triple during ‘Black Friday’ period

CROSS-BORDER transactions through Alibaba's payment affiliate Alipay during the "Black Friday" sales period this year more than tripled from a year ago due to growing interest of shopping on overseas websites.

Clothing, along with infant and beauty products were the top categories among Chinese shoppers, making up over 80 percent of total transactions during the three-day period from November 28-30.

Alipay teamed up with US department stores such as Macy's, Nieman Marcus, Bloomingdale's and Saks Fifth Avenue to allow Chinese consumers to pay with their Alipay accounts when shopping at these stores websites.

People in Shanghai were the most enthusiastic shoppers as they contributed 16.1 percent of the total cross-border transactions, followed by Beijing.

US-based online consultancy ComScore said earlier this week that sales on Cyber Monday, December 1, jumped 17 percent to US$2.04 trillion from a year ago.
