Alibaba will begin offering mobile numbers

ALIBABA Group said it will start to offer mobile numbers directly as it becomes the latest virtual mobile operator to offer telecommunications services to mobile phone users.

Alibaba allowed Taobao users to book a SIM card number in early May.

China last year issued telecommunications service licenses to 11 private firms, allowing them to offer mobile communications services under their own brands. The government hopes more competition will lead to better service quality.

Alibaba has received the license to resell telecommunications services from China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom.

The first 100,000 SIM numbers under the "Ali Telecom" brand will open to users in 29 cities and the final pricing plans will be released later.

Ali Telecom said more value-added services will be offered in connection with its online shopping units Tmall and Taobao. Other business units of Alibaba such as its cloud computing and digital entertainment services are also expected to combine with Ali Telecom in the near future.

Last month, China's largest home appliance retailer Suning also started to offer booking for SIM numbers under the "Suning Mobile" brand for mobile phone users.

Other firms with virtual carrier licenses include online retailer JD.com and handset distributor Tianyin.
