Ads cue more Apple stores

APPLE Inc, which just became China’s No. 1 smartphone vendor, expects to open stores in another five cities based on advertisements that it placed for retail staff.

It is hiring staff for its stores in Guangzhou, Shenyang, Tianjin, Nanjing and Dalian, where they currently don’t have outlets, Bloomberg News reported yesterday, citing advertisements posted on Apple’s website.

Apple China was unavailable for comment yesterday.

China will eventually overtake the US to become its largest market, Chief Executive Tim Cook said previously. The more stores will help Apple increase sales in China, he added.

Apple has 15 stores in the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong by 2014, and the firm plans to lift that to 25 soon.

It has opened stores in Zhengzhou, where it manufactures iPhones, Hangzhou, and a second Chongqing store in January.

Apple became the top smartphone vendor by units in the Chinese market for the first time in the fourth quarter due to surging demand for the iPhone 6, according to US-based research firm Canalys.
