Adobe to close Beijing R&D center in December

ADOBE yesterday announced the US computer software company will close its Beijing research and development center in late December.

More than 400 employees will leave starting late October. In December 2012, Adobe closed its Taiwan sales office, with the Hong Kong sales office supporting partners who sell its products in Taiwan.

The California-based company will maintain its sales offices on China’s mainland, Adobe said.

“Adobe’s presence in China will be focused on market development activities moving forward, and it will be dissolving and closing its research and development branch there,” the company said. “Adobe will maintain its sales presence in Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hong Kong and Taiwan.”

Adobe has not commented on the reason for reorganizing its business in China. But there is heavy market speculation it is linked to the firm’s weak performance. Last week, Adobe posted its worst quarterly revenue for Asia in the last five years. For the three months ended on August 29, sales in Asia fell 25 percent to US$148.2 million.
