150m smartphones affected by malware

ABOUT 150 million smartphones in China were infected by malware in the first half of 2015, Cheetah Mobile Inc, a Beijing-based Internet security firm, said yesterday.

Malware posed potential risks to users, many of whom use the phone to make mobile payment. There were also fears about mobile data consumption and personal information usage being stolen, said Nasdaq-listed Cheetah, whose investors include Xiaomi’s Chief Executive Lei Jun.

Globally, more than 610 million smartphones were affected in the first six months — 2.77 times compared with a year earlier.

The top-five countries to struggle with phone viruses were China, India, Russia, Indonesia and Mexico.

“Mobile security has become a serious problem in China now” with huge user base, Cheetah said in a report yesterday.

Cyber criminals were shifting their focus from personal computers to mobile platforms across both enterprise and consumer segments. Android phone users were more vulnerable to malware spread through third-party applications and Internet downloads, experts said.

More than 4.5 million kinds of malware were found by June, double than a year earlier.
