SME from Chile to tap opportunities through Shanghai FTZ

CHILE is seeking to encourage the country’s smaller companies to tap Chinese market through Shanghai free trade zone in a bid to further deepen bilateral economic relations between the two counties, an Chilean official said.

So far more than 50 large-sized Chilean enterprises have already carried out businesses in China while smaller companies are still absent due to a lack of convenient channel.

“The participation of smaller companies is key for the two countries to further boost two-way cooperation,” Andres Rebolledo, Chilean vice minister for trade, said in Shanghai today.

“With policy advantages, Shanghai’s free trade zone provides a more efficient logistic system and easier accesses for small-sized Chilean enterprises to explore Chinese market,” Rebolledo said.

As part of the Andean country’s effort to promote local food and beverage products, China-Chile Central, a 2,000-square-meter exhibition centre, was launched in the free trade zone today to display Chilean products.

Also today, a number of Chilean enterprises signed cooperation agreements with Kuajingtong, a cross-border e-commerce platform based in the FTZ, aiming to expand their distribution network to the distant China.

Bilateral trade between China and Chile amounted to US$34.1 billion last year, increasing fourfold since the signing of a free trade pact in 2005. Chilean food exports to China has increased more than 20 percent this year as the South American country has been managing to diversify its exports.

Rebolledo is optimistic about the two-way trade this year despite of the recent drastic devaluation in Chinese yuan.

“Chile and China are two complimentary countries that need each other’s products. Chilean products are increasingly popular here and the temporary fluctuation in currency exchange won’t change consumption trend,” he said.

As part of the 45th anniversary of the establishment of China-Chile diplomatic ties, a high-level delegation of more than 150 officials and businessmen led by Former Chilean president Eduardo Frei is visiting Shanghai between August 23 and 25.
