PV capacity expansion to be restricted

CHINA will restrict solar photovoltaic (PV) manufacturers from boosting production capacity in a bid to raise environmental standards, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said in a statement yesterday.

The government will tighten control over developing new projects which boost the production capacity of PV makers. It will also demand that PV producers replace their old machinery with more advanced and environment-friendly equipment.

The PV makers are also required to spend at least 10 million yuan (US$1.6 million) or more than 3 percent of their revenue every year on technological research and upgrading, whichever is greater.

The ministry will also relocate PV-making plants from areas with fragile ecological systems such as agricultural land, drinking water sources, and nature resorts.

The statement also listed requirements on minimum production capacity, energy consumption limit and pollution level for different PV categories.

China overtook Germany to become the world’s largest solar PV market, according to the Global New Energy Development Report 2014.
