Generating clean energy set to climb
CHINA yesterday succeeded in commissioning its second nuclear power generator that adopts the AP1000 pressurized water reactor technology, laying the foundation for more trial runs.
The Haiyang nuclear plant’s No. 1 unit will have a generation capacity of 1,250 megawatts, said the State Power Investment Corp after the successful test yesterday.
The nuclear plant in Shandong Province will begin commercial operation from next year and is able to generate nearly 11 billion kilowatt-hours every year, Liu Longyan, an engineer at SPIC, told Shanghai Daily.
China is promoting nuclear power to upgrade its energy structure. The government said Chinese nuclear plants should develop a total capacity of more than 58 million kilowatts under the 13th Five Year (2016-2020) Plan.
The world’s first nuclear system applying the US-developed AP1000 technology was commissioned last month in Zhejiang Province.
