Clean-energy consumption surges

CHINA’S coal production fell as more efforts have been made to use clean energy while the country has also boosted investment in high-value manufacturing, its top economic planner said yesterday.

The output of coal fell by 15.5 percent year on year in May and nearly 100 million tons of coal have been saved by replacing coal powered electricity with clean energy, the National Development and Reform Commission said.

Coal production declined 8.4 percent over the first five months of this year.

In the January-May period, China’s hydroelectricity output rose 16.7 percent while wind-powered electricity surged 14.5 percent from the same period of last year.

These alternative sources of energy have dented coal-powered electricity whose output has shrunk by 3.6 percent year on year.

“This is the proof that China is transforming in terms of economic structure, especially in electricity generation,” said Li Pumin, secretary-general of the economic planner.

The NDRC claimed that China is increasingly using hydroelectricity while consuming the lowest amount of coal-powered energy in a decade.

The NDRC also said the country’s economic structure is being upgraded with high-value technology and services.

Electricity use, the barometer of economic output, in the service sector and agricultural sector both rose 9.6 percent in the January-May period, while the industrial sector saw an increase of 0.4 percent.

Electricity consumption in the information service and software industry jumped 14.3 percent in first five months, higher than any other industrial sectors.

Companies engaged in clean and high-value manufacturing are receiving financial support from the government.

From January to April, 56 projects to construct intelligent power grids and develop oil and gas have been approved by the NDRC, with a total investment of 1.7 trillion yuan (US$258 billion).

Also, 586 billion yuan have been invested in 14 environmental protection projects and 725.3 billion yuan in 154 clean-energy projects.
